Please specify the steps you've already taken, so that we can rule out things.

Have you e. g. tried trashing Finale’s preferences file?

Hello Anna Marie,

Are you using macOS? If so, can you tell us what version you are using? The "Unhandled Exception Caught" error message is typically caused by macOS compatibility issues with Finale 2012. If you are using macOS 10.10 and newer, this may be the cause.

Good morning,

I'm having the same issue. I recently updated my MacBook Pro Mid 2009 to OS 10.11.6. Opened Finale for the first time today. I can see my scores, but hitting play causes the unhandled exception.

Below are some (possibly) pertinent lines from the Mac crash dump:

So, you missed this from David C.?

The "Unhandled Exception Caught" error message is typically caused by macOS compatibility issues with Finale 2012. If you are using macOS 10.10 and newer, this may be the cause.

It's time to upgrade. I'm just the messenger.

I didn't miss it. It just didn't contain a course of action and so, I didn't think it was meant to be an answer.

"It's time to upgrade" is an answer. An unfortunate one, considering my finances, but an answer nonetheless.

"Finale is aware of this incompatibility, and has a fix available for download at [url]" would have been another, much more acceptable answer.

Ah well.

How many companies patch an application 5 years after release when three versions have followed (2014, 2.14.5 & 25)?

None that come to my mind.

Apple has released 4 versions of the OS since then and will announce the next within a few weeks.

Okay. I just didn't see David's comment as an answer. No need to get snippy. I don't have money for an upgrade so, I'll just have to find another solution.

Thanks.

>No need to get snippy.<

That's good advice.

>I'll just have to find another solution. <

Good luck with that. Some resellers have the upgrade available for $119—I've not found lower. Google is your friend. If you purchase the upgrade from a reseller, do not use the Chrome browser to redeem the code. Safari and Firefox work fine.

I'll try to move it over to my windows machine and see if I have any luck there. If that doesn't work, MuseScore looks promising, and it's open source. As a last resort, I might be able to sell my daughter's prosthetic leg to raise the cash for a Finale upgrade. It's good to have options.

Thanks for your help.

I use Finale 2012 with OSX 10.11.6 very successfully. The only catch is that using Human Playback will cause a crash. If you can live without HP, it's worth a try.

I could knock out a simple score in 2011 if I had to. HP off, definitely. I understand that there are some 2012 issues that don't affect 2011 but haven't paid attention to them—I skipped 2012.

You cannot do a fresh installation of 2011 into Sierra. However, if it was installed in the past and not completely purged, reinstalling may work. It will be interesting to see what does and does not work in the next Mac OS release in a few months. It will most likely be announced at the WWDC in June and ship sometime in September. I have access to the beta but life is too short to fool with it.

Without getting into the Finale/Sibelius debate, no other notation app has Finale's functionality. I have current licenses for Notion 6, Overture 5, Encore 5, MuseScore 2 and a couple of others.

MuseScore and LilyPond are free and worth every penny, IMO.

Is there any upgrade for print music 2011 that will run on mac IOS 10.13.3 High Sierra?  I have a bunch of .mus files that I'd like to run on my newly updated mac. What to do?

Finale 25.4 and earlier will not install into High Sierra. This includes all versions including PrintMusic. This was fixed with 25.4.1 for Finale only. The current vrsion is 25.5.

The only available upgrade is to Finale 25. The price from PrintMusic is $200 if you upgrade within your MakeMusic Users account.

People have had problems using the Chrome browser for upgrades. Safari/Firefox/IE are fine. You may have to temporarily disable firewalls or antivirus during the upgrade. Once done, reenable and use our browser of choice.

Tom here,

I'm thinking of installing Finale v25.5 for Mac under the 30 day free trial offer.  to see how it works and if compatible with my old .mus files. Don't know what the final cost is 150.00 or $200.00 if I want to buy??  My level of composing is for my accordion nothing real complex.  You guys think i should try the free offer or what?  My problem as listed earlier is I upgraded my mac software to 10.13.0 and my print music 2011 won't open.

Thanks

Tom

I tried to be as clear as can be with my earlier answer. Let's try again: There is no version of PrintMusic that can install over High Sierra.

Finale 25 will install on your Mac. The current upgrade price is $200.

Of course, download the evaluation copy and try it out. It is fully functional for 30 days except that it does not include the Garritan Instruments for Finale.

Great. When you upgrade, you will download the purchased version. It will have two installers, the other being for the Garritan Instruments for Finale (GIFF). You want to run both installers at that time so that paths etc. are created properly.

How do I open Finale without the "unhandled exception caught" blocking me?
