For may years I have used the Graphics Tool, Export Selection to create TIFF and JPG files to drop into Word documents.  I've not needed to do it for some time.  So when I went to do it yesterday, the Export Selection in the drop-down menu was not bolded, i.e., not available even though it showed along with the other selections.  I downloaded Finale, but the same thing happened.  I'm running Finale on an iMac with OS Big Sur.  Anybody know how to resolve this?  Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that you apply the correct procedure ?

Graphics Tool

Hold the Cmd key down,  double click on the score and drag to form a rectangle. At his point, Export Selection is normally available.

Big Sur is not yet supported. That may be one of the reasons why.

Can you still access .pdf in the Print menu? It's not the same as the result is grey scale and not true black (only on a Mac). If acceptable, you should be able to reduce the file size and change to black in any of many inexpensive pdf tools for Mac — providing they are Big Sur compatible.

Since you are talking about the menu item {Export Selection…} - and not about {Export Pages…} - I suppose that you need to export a selected area on the page, not an entire page - right?

To make the menu item {Export Selection…} available (bolded) you must select an area.

As long as no area is selected, {Export Selection…} is not available (bolded).

By The Way:

You can also export as PDF, and drop the PDF file into Word documents.

Have you tried that?

With the PDF format you get the best of both worlds:

small file size and the highest possible resolution.
