I don't know if it's the "right" way, but I used the Filter, set to Chords. Then I copied the guitar staff, and pasted it into the Cantor. Finally, delete the guitar staff.
The playback window might not be expanded. I’m not sure where that control is in Windows, but a quick check of your help files should show you. Search playback window.
Are you starting and stopping playback with the controls, or with the spacebar? If the latter, that's really a PAUSE, and so you can't change things.

Are you sure you're using slurs as slurs, and ties as ties? They are two different tools. Can you post a screenshot of the problem?
