I need to beam different voices in a baroque piece differently.  The piece is in common time.  The continuo bass needs to be beamed as it were in 2/2, ie 2 lots of 4 quavers (8th notes) to the measure.  The very florid flute part needs be beamed as 8/8 ie each quaver separated.  I can alter each part to my requirements by selecting the relevant line but then find that the other part has been altered to match which looks awful and is very hard to read.  The voice part remains beamed to the lyrics, as I have selected, except that the long melismas go into whichever beaming is on at the time which is not acceptable when that is the minim (half note) version.

Any ideas?  There seem to be pages of stuff in help which don't address the problem.  Am I going to have to go all the way through slashing with speedy entry?

What are your steps when you “alter each part” ?

When I use one of the entry tools (Simple Entry or Speedy Entry) to break or join a beam, the other part is not affected.

Sounds confusing to me, but what do I know? Was this common practice with baroque scores?

As a singer, I would much prefer my part beamed to the time signature, not the lyrics.

I’m not totally understanding your needs, Margaret Johnson, but you can either use speedy entry as you indicated, try Utilities:Rebeam to Time Signature and futz with that, or try Patterson Plugins (the commercial version), which I love because I just select notes and it beams them based on the selection.
