Finale 26

Apple Version 14.0.3 (16610.4.3.1.7)  Macbook Pro (2015)

It simply does not work.

It doesn't accept my keyboard (MIDIPLUS X6) which is not suppose to need a driver.  It is supposed to work with a USB plug.  It doesn't.

So, I can't (so far) write any notes while trying to compose a piece.  (a minor oversight I'm sure)

Can I assume you mean OS11 (Big Sur?) Is there any other way that it doesn’t work, or just the keyboard? Have you opened a support ticket?

Does the keyboard work in Garageband? Does the keyboard work while using Garritan sounds in standalone mode?

In Norman's other post about this issue, he said the MidiPlus keyboard used to work with Finale. I wonder what has changed. At least we now know that this was not due to a recent Windows update which can mess with drivers.

I have been looking into the garage key option.  Another possibility is to use Muse Score.  I have a coach who helps me with Finale.  He is on the faculty of a local college.  He works with Finale by putting in notes one at a time.  I enter them by ear using (or used to using) an external keyboard.  Garage Key is not simple but at least I don't have to put up with Finale.

With regard to a support ticket:  I haven't tried to do that.  Where can I find it on the web?

I really appreciate you guys trying to help me.

For starters, you haven’t told us what we need to know. We aren’t mind readers. since most of us who use MIDI keyboards aren’t having this problem, you can’t assume we’ll just know and give the two sentence answer that fixes everything. So start here:

https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/215729367-General-Discussion-House-Rules

Don’t worry, you’ll have to give all the same info to Finale Support. Use the Submit a request link at the top. Do not post your personal info on these pages (serial#, phone, email etc.) as you will for the Support ticket.

That said, MIDI connect on a Mac is easy: It just works but Finale may have to be set up to see it. This is normally done in Audio MIDI Setup.app, part of the Mac OS. I’m in that class of “It just works for me” like most Mac users. My Line 6 and Yamaha USB keyboards connect through Core Audio, part of the MacOS, while my Casio and other 5pin devices connect through any of my 5pin DIN interfaces—these require their manufacturers MIDI drivers.

A MidiPlus keyboard can be USB or DIN. You haven’t even told us what you’re using or how you’re connecting.

I think it would be most helpful to know which version of OS X/macOS you are using, Norman. While there are incompatibilities with MIDI drivers with macOS 11.x (Big Sur), that's only for keyboards and other MIDI devices that need specific drivers (Big Sur broke my old MOTU FastLane interface, and no new drivers are around, but a MIDI interface like the mio, which uses the built-in MIDI drivers in macOS, works flawlessly as expected). So if you're on an older version of OS X, it may not at all be any driver issues. I've honestly never had a major issue with getting Finale to automatically recognize what I'm connecting; I use an old Ensoniq KS-32 keyboard I've had since the early 90's and that connects fine via the mio, and when I'm in my office on the other coast, I have a cheap m-audio MIDI keyboard controller that has its own built-in MIDI interface that doesn't need a specific driver, and that has always also worked fine.

So it would be great if you could let us know

  • the OS version
  • your version of Finale (I know it's v26, but is it the latest update?_
  • Does the keyboard work with any other MIDI software on your Mac?
